2007 Caldecott Goes to David Wiesner

The American Library Association (ALA) has announced the 2007 Caldecott and Newbery Medals, some of the most coveted awards of the children's book world, along with many other awards. At-a-glance:

. Caldecott Medal (most distinguished U.S. children's picture book): David Wiesner, Flotsam
. Newbery Medal (most outstanding contribution to children's literature): Susan Patron, The Higher Power of Lucky
. Michael L. Printz Award (for excellence in young adult lit): Gene Yang, American Born Chinese (a graphic novel!)
. Margaret A. Edwards Award (lifetime contributions in writing for young adults): Lois Lowry
. Laura Ingalls Wilder Award (lasting contributions to children’s lit): James Marshall
. Coretta Scott King Book Award (for outstanding African Americans in children's book publishing): Sharon Draper, Copper Sun (writer); Kadir Nelson, Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (illustrator)
. Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Author Award: Traci L. Jones
. Schneider Family Book Award: The Deaf Musicians
. Theodor Seuss Geisel Beginning Reader Award: Laura McGee Kvasnosky, Zelda and Ivy: The Runaways
. Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award: Catherine Thimmesh, Team Moon: How 400,000 People Landed Apollo 11 on the Moon
. Mildred L. Batchelder Award (outstanding translation of foreign children's book): Jean-Claude Mourlevat, The Pull of the Ocean
. Andrew Carnegie Medal (outstanding chidren's video): Mo Willems and Weston Woods Studio, Knuffle Bunny
